The America - 4 Bedrooms/3 Bathrooms - (Plan #HWBDO10584)
This handsome territorial-style home is ideal for an active family that likes its activities and socializing to spill outdoors. A wraparound front porch and three rear porches, one of them screened, offers plenty of space for barbecues or just sitting and reading in the sunshine. Inside, a magnificent kitchen, with an island counter and loads of counter and shelf space, will immediately catch your eye. It opens to a large informal dining area and the hearth-warmed keeping room with French doors to one of the back porches. A study has French-door access to the front porch. The master bedroom, with a lavish bath, has private access to a small rear porch. Three upstairs bedrooms have their own baths; two enjoy walk-in closets.

The Unites States is lagging behind in the creation of green roofs. With all of the potential benefits—economic, social, and, of course, environmental—it's unfortunate that these landscaped roof tops aren't more prevalent. In this month's issue, we take a comprehensive look at green roofs, detailing their construction and installation, outlining their benefits and costs, and mapping their proliferation in the U.S.
We want you designers out there to gear up for the Metropolis Next Generation® Design Competition. Help make our world better, safer, and more sustainable! Students and professionals from all design disciplines who have been working for ten years or less are eligible for the competition. The $10,000 award aims to kick-start your entrepreneurial project.
And be sure to check out what's going on in your neighborhood with metropolismag.com's Events section.

How Green is Your City?
Executive editor Martin Pedersen introduces September's three-part feature:
"The Green Roofing of America" certainly has a nice ring to it, but the idea remains more wishful thinking than reality. True, there are more green roofs in operation than ever before, but the bulk of new construction is built without any environmental considerations at all.
Part One: View From the Bridge
A slice of Hollywood East set amid the industrial squalor of Queens, Silvercup Studios plays host to a new featured performer: New York's largest green roof.
Part Two: Sweet Sedum
Green-roof technology now offers a host of options—from the humble patch of grass to sophisticated feats of structural engineering.
Part Three: Charting Our Progress
Although limited in scope, a recent boom in green-roof construction demonstrates the pressing need for more.

One Steppe Beyond: Norman Foster's Pyramid of Peace in Kazakhstan.
You hear a lot about pushing the boundaries in architecture. In Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, this overused phrase is literally true. Walk a few hundred yards from the manicured central boulevard, sidestep the preposterously grand presidential palace, and you are quickly into a shanty town of construction workers' huts. Cross the river, and you are out on the dusty steppe. And there, pushing the city boundary right out, is the Pyramid of Peace. It is designed by Britain's most high-achieving architect, Lord Foster.
